More about Gems:
Gem stones are minerals, few are rocks and certain others are of organic origin having beauty, durability and rarity as their essential attributes. These are broadly classified into precious, semiprecious, rare stones and organic gems.

Precious : Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald & Alexandrite

Semiprecious : Corundums, Beryl(Other than emerald), Feldspar, Chrysoberyl, Garnet, Quartz, Jade, Lapislazuli, Spinel, Torquoise, Opal, Peridot, Topaz, Zircon, Tourmaline etc.

Rare Stones : Spodumene, Diopside, Apatite, Iolite, Sillimanite, Kyanite, Fluorite, Malachite, Rhodonite, Heamatite etc.

Organic Gems : Pearl, Coral, Ivory, Amber, Jet & Rudraksha 

Why Gem testing:
Rarity and high cost of precious stones, fascination of mankind toward gemstones paved the way for flow of imitation stones to the market. The imitation may be a synthetic stone made to imitate natural stone or a natural low cost stone imitating expensive stone. Therefore proper identification of gemstones is highly essential before use.
